Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, traditionally believed to have been founded by St. Thomas (Mar Thoma) one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ, and known by the name of the Apostle, in the year AD.52, have its Head Quarters at SCS Campus, Tiruvalla, Kerala, India.
In the sixties, as people from different parts of India came to Abu Dhabi, the Mar Thoma Christians from Kerala formed a prayer group to worship God as taught by their forefathers. Regular prayer meetings were held at the ADPC “Chummery” or at the bachelor quarters of ADCO. Occasional visits of the Vicars of the Mar Thoma Parishes in Kuwait and Bahrain were warmly welcomed by the members.
Rev. M.O.Oommen (senior) celebrated Holy Communion Service in Abu Dhabi at the ADMA Training Center in September 1965 for the first time. Rt. Rev. Philipose Mar Chrysostom, the then Missionary Bishop (current Mar Thoma Valia Metropolitan) visited Abu Dhabi and celebrated Holy Communion in June 1968.
The necessity for the formation of a separate congregation for the Marthomites was felt as more and more members joined the prayer group. This was made possible, with 112 members, on 12th January 1971 when Rt.Rev.Dr. Alexander Mar Theophilus, the then Diocesan Bishop (later Mar Thoma Metropolitan) visited Abu Dhabi. He was pleased with the activities of the prayer group, and released a Kalpana elevating the prayer group as a full fledged Parish with effect from 1st September 1971. Rev. K. S. Varghese, Vicar of Bahrain Parish was deputed to take charge of Abu Dhabi Parish as its visiting Vicar.
In our 41 years we have become one of the largest Mar Thoma Congregation in the Middle East and have constructed a church of our own in Mussaffa. Abu Dhabi Church had started with a small group of people and now our membership consists of more than 1200 families and 400 Bachelors constituting a total of nearly 4500 memebrs. We have constructed our own parish hall and parsonage in the same compound of St.Andrews Center and currently in Phase II construction at Mussaffa in addition to the Mar Thoma Church.
